Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on January 27, 1756 in Salzburg, Germany.  He composed his first piece when he was only five years old, and he would go on to compose over 600 more works before his death on December 5, 1791. Mozart greatly influenced many other well-known composers, including Franz Joseph Haydn, who was his contemporary, and Ludwig van Beethoven, who was a student of Haydn.

Wolfgang and his older sister Maria Anna were the only two of seven siblings to live to adulthood. The two were taught to play the harpsichord by their father, Leopold, and they exhibited their musical talents at a very early age. They both performed in many cities in Europe and were recognized for their talents.  At the time, however, it was considered improper for a woman to have a career during adulthood as women were expected to marry and bear children. Maria Anna was forced to give up her musical career to raise a family, but her brother went on to become one of the best known composers of his time.

Mozart wrote many of his most famous works, including his operas Die Zauberflöte, known in English as The Magic Flute, and La clemenza di Tito, during the last few years of his life. On the day of the opening performance of La clemenza di Tito, Mozart started showing symptoms of a mysterious illness. This illness would eventually take his life just a few months later at a tragically early age.  Despite his untimely death, Mozart was the most prolific composer of the Classical period, and his popular work continues to be performed today.

It really is a shame that Wolfgang’s sister, Maria Anna was not allowed to play publicly. I remember reading a short biography of Wolfgang Mozart that said some of the people who heard them play actually said that Maria Anna was a superior player. I wonder what the world of classical music would be like if they could have performed together and if Maria Anna’s pieces were given the same consideration that Wolfgang’s were.

I am trying to imagine how much Mozart could have done musically if he would have lived a little longer, not to mention how far his sister would progressed if she was given the opportunity . I was very pleased to learn so very interesting facts about his life in your comments the which speaks of him and his sister being the only surviving siblings out of seven.
